Get Ahead of the Competition with Mobile Applications
Mobile is quickly eclipsing desktop in its importance to business users. We’re staying ahead of the trend with a “mobile first” mentality. Designing and coding for touch requires a different kind of thinking. Our expert mobile developers take your strategic goals and build an engaging user experience that makes your message accessible and interactive to the mobile user.
Aquent Studios has over 20 years providing technical publication solutions to clients and more than 12 years of experience developing and managing content in a structured environment.
We are uniquely positioned to provide services in this arena because we have many team members with expertise in designing content management systems, converting legacy content to XML, and utilizing the systems to author efficiently and optimize content reuse. Furthermore we have the proven ability to train, mentor and develop the skills necessary to succeed and lead in the Structured Content environment.
Content Development and Strategy
Simple language, always on topic
Successful authoring at the topic level requires two essential skills:
- Clear and concise writing
- Proper topic composition
Clear and concise writing
Simple language allows a topic to be inserted into any document without disrupting the writing style of the document. Without simple language, documents begin to read like a patchwork, or ‘Frankendocs.’ Simple language also has immense benefits for localization.
A topic should present one thought. If it is a task, it should tell the reader how to do one thing. If it is a reference or a concept, it should convey one idea.
We use sound writing techniques and ensure appropriate document strategy to get the message across to the intended audience in the most cost-efficient way. We also audit to ensure the content is performing well and adjust based on customer feedback and overall experience.
We work closely with engineers to understand new technologies, and we work closely with stakeholders to understand gaps in order to create support documentation and training materials to keep your company and your customers informed.
Managing Structured Environments
For a structured environment to succeed, effective organization at all levels is essential. This applies to maintaining the content management system, establishing a common directory structure for all contributors, as well as providing guidelines for organizing the actual content.
Implement an Agile process to maintain the CMS
The Agile development process improves productivity while fostering strong teams. Agile allows for active management of changes and improvements to the CMS once it is implemented. Everyone has visibility to what their teammates are working on, and regular check-in meetings allow the team to collaborate and share ideas.
Establish a common structure
One of the principal advantages of working within a structured environment is that it allows multiple people to make simultaneous contributions to the same project. Establishing a common structure for everyone makes it easy for co-developers to locate information easily, and it allows the CMS to operate on a cohesive, consistent system for referencing shared assets.
There’s a sweet spot to aim for when managing content reuse – reuse complete ideas. This means that you don’t componentize a string of text just because that string might appear in multiple documents. Doing so can work for a handful of strings, but quickly gets unwieldy.
To maximize reuse, plan for some variation in your content. Things like images, product names, and cross-references need to be handled as variables, so that a piece of content can be adjusted for context without being directly rewritten.
Migrating to Structured Content
Aquent has assisted in the design, redesign, and implementation of several content management systems. We understand the underlying technology and the intricacies of content reuse, especially for localization.
Aquent writers and project managers have run the gauntlet to transition from unstructured to structured environments and gained the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. We are perfectly positioned to recommend best practices and then to implement them.
